Defiance

Defiance

by C.J. Redwine

Within the walls of Baalboden, beneath the shadow of the city’s brutal leader, Rachel Adams has a secret. While other girls sew dresses, host dinner parties, and obey their male Protectors, Rachel knows how to survive in the wilderness and deftly wield a sword. When her father, Jared, fails to return from a courier mission and is declared dead, the Commander assigns Rachel a new Protector, her father’s apprentice, Logan—the same boy Rachel declared her love for two years ago, and the same boy who handed her heart right back to her. Left with nothing but fierce belief in her father’s survival, Rachel decides to escape and find him herself. But treason against the Commander carries a heavy price, and what awaits her in the Wasteland could destroy her.

At nineteen, Logan McEntire is many things. Orphan. Outcast. Inventor. As apprentice to the city’s top courier, Logan is focused on learning his trade so he can escape the tyranny of Baalboden. But his plan never included being responsible for his mentor’s impulsive daughter. Logan is determined to protect her, but when his escape plan goes wrong and Rachel pays the price, he realizes he has more at stake than disappointing Jared.

As Rachel and Logan battle their way through the Wasteland, stalked by a monster that can’t be killed and an army of assassins out for blood, they discover romance, heartbreak, and a truth that will incite a war decades in the making.

I started this book with high hopes and was not disappointed! Love, love, LOVE, this book I don't have a single complaint about it other than the fact that sadly, like all books it ended and I still wanted more. C.J's writing amazed me it was just that wonderful and made me stop and say, "that's what I want to write like when I become an author! That's a true gift." As you may have noticed by now I am highly critical and I am still in awe of her writing style and skill . So I was extremely impressed and after finishing the book C.J quickly became one of my writing role models and idols. The storyline is completely original with creative new situations and creatures. The plot line was great filled with new twists, turns and puzzles to keep you thinking and on your toes through the very last words. I loved the fact that the story was told by both Rachel and Logan, that really strengthened the book immensely and the ending was perfect I have never read an ending that was as perfect as this book's. It was the perfect balance between an absolute solution and killer cliffhanger, giving the reader just enough information to leave them satisfied and still be writing the rest of the ending in their minds. This book is perfect for one of my favorite quotes/sayings, "The best books have two authors, the writer, and the reader." Rachel and Logan are wonderful characters, that are very expressive and many readers will find it easy to connect and relate to them and their emotions. Best of all they are real, they aren't the perfect looking and acting, stereotypical hero and heroine. They are just like normal people inside and they make mistakes and come to terms with them. We mess up and we get over, so do Rachel and Logan. Not every person in the book loves them or what they have done just like in real life, there is always someone that doesn't like us. Heroines and heroes in other books tend to look supermodel perfect, never make mistakes and when they save the day everyone in town loves them. So not like in real life. I applaud C.J. for making them so normal and relatable it made the book 1,000 times better. This is a MUST read especially for aspiring writers. It is an adventure every reader will love no matter what age or gender. I give Defiance 5 out of 5 stars.
