Writer's Block, Procrastination, and Help

I love writing, don't get me wrong, but really let's face it writing can be really hard when you don't have any ideas that make you want to run off into the distance screaming to the world about it. Even then sometimes it's difficult. I'm doing a writer's group workshop thing and now I have to actually write and share stuff. That kind of freaks me out. I'm not really a share-y because when I do get excited enough to write something by the time I read it back I feel more like this:

And I realize the entire thing was crap and laugh loudly at myself and my own writing. So naturally I'm not eager to share it and have it laughed at by people other than myself, but I feel like it will be good for me and I can learn a lot. The only problem is I haven't written in forever and I have no idea what to write about. I have writer's block.

I'm supposed to write a dialog that reveals things about the character and shows their personality and have at least a scene of something done. But...

So I want all of you guys to comment below with a few random words and see if any of those words strike me like a bolt of inspiration.
Sadly I have procrastinated greatly, as usual, so this might not be helpful until two weeks from now, but we'll see.

Additionally, on an entirely different note, what would you guys want to learn from other bloggers? What topics would you want to get tips on or what would you like to learn how to do?

Please and thank you guys!

Sunday Swoons

It's that delightful time of the week again where we discuss swoon worthy things! Feel free to link up! You can either use my theme or make your own. It's pretty short and sweet this time!

This week's theme is: Love Triangles!

Three of the loveliest love triangles:

Jeb/Alyssa/Morpheus

Ok, this has to be one of the most well done and most well loved love triangles ever, and not just in my mind. *subtly jerks head in Cait's direction* It works with the story, it's logical, and you can totally root for both the boys. I'm living proof of this. I have yet to decide between them, because they are pretty much equally flawed and they both seem like pretty decent choices. (To me. some people *clears throat* believe otherwise.)

Elijah/Callie/John

This one I sort of flip flop on but in the end I feel that it made sense to be a part of the story so it wasn't like it was just thrown on in there. Also, it was really logical (again, like in Splintered) that she would be interested in both of them, and that both of them would be interested in her. It also made sense for her to be torn between the two and I felt it added depth to her character. It was resolved beautifully too!

I'm really picky when it comes to love triangles so I was having trouble thinking of a third. I think I remember liking the Jem/Tessa/Will love triangle from Clockwork Angel, but I read it quite a while ago and I don't really remember.

The Lousiest Love Triangles:

Aspen/America/Maxon

This triangle was bothersome enough in the first book but by the second it was almost ruinous. I get that the center of almost the whole book was the triangle. That's ok, but the issue was how it was written. While it was logical America would love both Aspen and Maxon and they'd love her, the way the characters reacted to it, expressed it, and handled it was really really annoying (more so in the second book.) It was just really melodramatic.
(I still enjoyed the book.)

Tania/ Those two guys I cant remember the names of (the partner in the play and the boy from the vacation)

Ok this was awful because she went for and scored both of them at the same time. That's really all I have to say. Nothing about the secondary relationship helped the story or the characters. I don't really have much to say, I feel like that sums it all up.

Cheater Cheater Pumpkin Eater...

Damian/Alexa/Rylan

The resolution was the only lovely part of this love triangle. Go strong females! The second interest was almost haphazardly thrown into the ending where it didn't do anything for the story or the characters other than provide an excuse for Alexa to ditch Damian at the end and be a strong independent woman. I felt like it was a bit unnecessary and not very well done. It just wasn't my cup of tea (the triangle not the book. I liked the book.)

What are some of your favorite and least favorite love triangles? What swoon worthy topic should we tackle about next week?

Crazy Creatures of The Blogging World

I am bringing this feature back for realzies this time! I have a bunch of interviews planed so that I can start doing them more often and you guys can meet and get to know more awesome bloggers! So keep checking back for more!

Quick news updates before we start:
1. I didn't get any books this week because I still have enough books that need reading from last week that you could bury a body (but please don't try that at home folks). So no Saturday Stacking the Shelves.

2.

Yes, yes I really was impaled. I think I will survive. I think. If you don't hear from me for a while don't worry I'm just crying in the corner and slowly bleeding out/ dying to death. Yes I just said dying to death. You want to argue with a dying person? Yeah I thought not.

(It appears pain and trauma make me sassy and combative. I apologize. I love you guys don't worry.)

Ok, I'm done let's get this party started! Today Skylar Finn/ Selena from Life of A Random is here with us!
Tell us about you and your blog! How did you start? When? Ect.
Um…How do I start? Hi, I’m Skylar aka Selena in the real world. ;) I just recently graduated from high school after being homeschooled the whole way through. There are three things I love: chocolate, books, and sleep. Since a blog about chocolate or sleep probably would bore anyone who visited to tears…I have a book blog called Life of a Random. I’m short. I don’t scream (seriously, I don’t).

I started my blog in the spring of 2013 (I think). At that time, Life of a Random wasn’t a book blog. It didn’t really have any type of focus at all, but I started it just to have a place to write down my feelings and things I was interested in. Slowly the blog began to gravitate towards books. I LOVE books. I ship fictional couples all. the. time. And I love using Life of a Random to talk to other people like me in a way I wouldn’t be able to right off in real life because of my personality. It’s funny because even though I’m an introvert and a pretty shy one, I am SO sarcastic and funny (or at least I like to think so) on my blog. It’s great!

What is your favorite part of blogging?
I think there are many reasons that make blogging one of my favorite things to do! Buuut, the top two would probably be interacting with everyone in the book blogging community and keeping up with book news like books getting all the hype or books that aren’t even out yet.

It’s the greatest feeling to have people around the world, whom you haven’t even seen, support you and like your blog enough to follow and comment. I still mentally scream when I see another person has followed my blog. I don’t think that will ever get old. J

What’s your favorite feature to participate in and why?
Hm, yikes. This is hard. This isn’t a particular feature but I really like doing tags. For features, I’m torn between Waiting on Wednesday or Top Ten Tuesdays. The first one, because it’s so simple, and the second one because it’s really fun. And simple.

What is the hardest part of blogging for you?
Finding ideas for discussion posts. It’s really hard to find something original to talk about, so while I love writing discussion posts…the ideas don’t come easily.

Or stuff like scheduling and pre-writing posts *blushes*. I’m getting better but it’s still one of the harder parts of blogging for me.

How do you keep up with everything? How do you keep from being overwhelmed or deal with being overwhelmed?

That is a very good question. Typically, I’m not the most organized blogger, but more recently I’ve been trying to keep things orderly by using Google Calendar. I also keep a folder in each of my emails. One of them is called ‘Book Reviewing’ and another is called ‘Bloggy Friends’. I know, I’m so original. Be jealous.

If I get too overwhelmed, I take a short break from blogging and only publish posts that I have an obligation to publish like book blitzes or tours.
How do you conduct your interviews?
I usually ask interview questions by email. I try to make them interesting and ask questions that will get informative answers, but also make it fun and easy-going at the same time. I don’t like things to be too stiff on my blog.

How do you expand your following?
With social media and commenting. Social media mainly being Twitter. I tweet all my post links, usually more than once, and also keep my Twitter up to date with personal tidbits. Commenting is also something that will get a lot of people coming back to your blog, especially for features like Waiting on Wednesday. My advice—link-up with your post and then go comment on A LOT of other bloggers’ WoW posts with a link back to your post. It’s exhausting but worth it.

A giveaway *wiggles eyebrows* can also be a good way to gain more followers, especially if you’re only a little ways from a particular goal.

What are your blogging and reading pet peeves?
I really don’t like it when I take the time to type out a long comment and it only gets a one sentence reply. Not a fan. And I definitely don’t like it when the blogger doesn’t reply at all.

Oh, and if a blog has fuzzy graphics or designs you can tell aren’t good quality then I tend to not be as attracted to it. I know that you can’t tell quality of the blog by the look of the blog so I try to not be biased as much.

Reading pet peeves…
1) I hate insta-love. HATE it. According to me, it’s way too common and unrealistic.
2) I don’t like it when the main character is selfish. Like, infuriatingly selfish not realistically selfish. There’s a difference ;)
3) Some inner dialogues of girl main characters I read are creepy. Because they’re admiring a guy and they go, “Oh what nice, muscular thighs you have.” And I’m like *shakes head really fast* What. Why are you admiring his thighs. If you can see a guy’s thigh muscles through his jeans, by the way, those aren't regular jeans.
4) Making out. Okay, let me clarify. Making out when the world around you is threatening to explode and lots of people are dying and mutants have escaped from a top secret science lab, but, oh, we’re going to make out. NO. THAT IS NOT ACCEPTABLE. Go save the world.

What has been your favorite blogging experience?
Being nominated for the Liebster Blog Award! It’s so fun and I mentally screeched when I got my first one. It’s a great way to discover small blogs or to help other people find some of your own favorite small blogs.

What are five of your favorite blogs/bloggers and why?
Cait & Mime @Notebook Sisters (because they’re hilarious, well-written/spoken, and just awesome girls), Ella @Once Upon a Bookish Time (she’s just so enthusiastic about books and leaves the BEST comments), Tansie @Totally Tansie (two words: dry humor), Aneta Augustine @The Graffiti on the Wall (you want someone to tell you exactly whether or not a book is good based on literary points? Aneta doesn’t let feels get in the way of saying it like it is), and Amber @The Mile-Long Bookshelf(Her booktube channel and discussion posts are the best. And she loves pizza. Guys, this is important).

What tips do you have for fellow bloggers?
COMMENT. You’ve probably heard this before, but comment, comment, and then comment some more. It’s the best way to gain more followers and friends. Also, you may just be starting out. And maybe you’re getting discouraged because you only have two followers and you’ve been blogging for ages compared to other blogs who already have a few hundred followers (um, yeah, how do they do that again?). Don’t give up. Keep going. Join features. Make friends. You will get followers and more importantly you’ll find people you can gush over books with.

Most importantly—don’t forget that you’re doing this because you want to. If it starts feeling a bit too much like work and when you have to force yourself to write posts, you need to take a deep breath, a small break, and re-discover why you started blogging in the first place. J

How can people find and follow you?

Thanks again Skylar it was great getting to know you better!

Check out Life of a Random and the other fabulous blogs she mentioned! Let me know if you have any suggestions/ nominations/ recommendations for other blogs and bloggers to interview and spotlight!

Sunday Swoons

It's Sunday again! Here is the second Sunday Swoons post!  Here is how it works, every Sunday I will discuss, list, rave about, fangirl about, quote, or mention something totally swoon worthy that I've read! Feel free to join in, but please link back and mention me, thanks you guys! (You don't have to use the same topic as me but you're welcome to!)

This week's swoon topic is: My Top 5 Most Romantic, Romantic Gestures

(Again not in any particular order.)

CAUTION: I AM DISCUSSING SPECIFIC SCENES FROM BOOKS. IF YOU DON'T WANT TO HEAR ABOUT THESE SCENES I AM SORRY, SKIP OVER THEM OR SOMETHING.

Daemon and Katy

I feel awful because I don't remember what book it is in when this happens! Daemon brings Katy Thanksgiving dinner and spends the night with her celebrating since she didn't have anyone to celebrate with. And then he helps her put up the Christmas tree while watching holiday Charlie Brown (the parade wasn't on at the time), because he remembered that she missed doing that with her dad before he passed away!
Talk about heart melting! *sniffles*

***

                                                        Gus and Hazel

That awesome moment (that I totally called! Sorry I'm still working on letting that go...) when
Gus used his wish to take Hazel with him to Amsterdam to meet her favorite author. Also, the fact that he told her by taking her to a park and surrounding her with dutch things and orange things because Amsterdam.

***

Kai and Anna

That time in Sweet Reckoning (*SOBS* The series is over!) when he finally takes her to The Grand Canyon because he wouldn't take her on their first trip together and she had really wanted to go. Part of the cuteness is why he takes finally takes her but I won't discuss that cuz that's REALLY spoilery.

***

Rudy and Liesel

That Kiss! That's all I have to say, I'm too emotionally distraught to continue just from thinking about it.

***

                                                         Ajax and Sasha

That time when every piece of clothing she owns is shredded and so he takes her on a shopping spree, pays for everything and just genuinely enjoys being with her, so much that he doesn't even mind that they are shopping. That's just adorable, and a man that takes you shopping, that offers to take you, and he pays and he enjoys  it...marry him. That's all I have to say about that and I don't even like shopping!

What is the most romantic gesture you've ever witnessed or been a part of? What is you top 5 list? What should next Sunday's topic be?

What makes you go:

(P.S. sorry for the weird formatting!)

Short and Sweet

There are a few books that I never did a full review for, so I'm going to do some more Short and Sweet Reviews! Enjoy!

Dorothy Must Die

by Danielle Paige

This morbid tale of what happened after Dorothy followed that famous yellow brick road is entertaining and
is over flowing with strong characters that at times seem a bit too similar, but are lovable none the less. The plot got a bit messy and irritating towards the end. The ending itself  was a bit odd leaving everything unsolved, but overall the book was fun to read and the writing was good. I give it two and a half or three stars out of five.

Nearly Gone

by Elle Cosimano

This is a great mystery that will keep you guessing until the end. Sweet romance is woven in and the characters are realistic and fun. The plot was great and the writing solid. It was very entertaining. Three stars out of five.

Control

by Lydia Kang

This book is a fun thrill ride. The characters are a blast and it is packed with emotion, high stakes, betrayal,
love, and so much more. It is highly entertaining and the end is shocking! It sort of reminded me of Hank from the X-men...I recommend it and give it three or three and a half stars.

Grim

by Ellen Hopkins, Amanda Hocking, Julie Kagawa, Claudia Gray, Rachel Hawkins, Kimberly Derting, Myra McEntire, Malinda Lo, Sarah Rees-Brennan, Jackson Pearce, Christine Johnson, Jeri Smith Ready, Shaun David Hutchinson, Saundra Mitchell, Sonia Gensler, Tessa Gratton, and Jon Skrovon

This collection of stories was a very fun read. Each story was interesting and I didn't really dislike any of them although I did like some better than others. I was expecting them to be creepier or darker than most of them actually were but I loved the book as a whole all the same. My favorites were: Beauty and The Chad, A Real Boy, Beast/Beast, The Raven Princes , Better, and Figment. Over all I give it three stars, and I definitely recommend it for something fun and different!

Stacking The Shelves!

I know, I know. I always post this on Saturdays if I post one at all. I promise it is not because the world is ending. (maybe... actually I can't promise that's not why, because, contrary to common belief,  I am simple muggle and don't posses that kind of omnipotence and knowledge.)

While we are on the topic of our imminent deaths and the inevitable death of our planet and life as we know it enjoy this song about our "impending doom"! (It rocks listen to more by Storyman.)

Anyways, back on track sorry, it is actually because I have this thing called a life, and I occasionally get delusional and attempt to live it to the fullest and actually do things and some times those things get in the way of posting on specific days. This is one of those crazy times. Yes, I know I could set it to post automatically but I don't trust it because it didn't post like I asked it to one time, since then I haven't trusted it with such important matters. So here is my rather sizable haul for the week! Link up with Tynga @ Tynga's Reviews! Don't forget to comment or share with me your haul in the comments below, on Facebook, via email ect! From Liberty Bay Books's Treasure Trove:
Both of these sound mysterious, cool, and a little creepy with a heaping side of thrilling, so I'm very excited to start them! Vanishing Season. The Dark Between.
From The Local Library:
Look at that avalanche of loveliness! I am going to try reading The Bear and The Bell Jar as part of my challenge to read an "adult" book every month (or so). The Bear is not really what I'm used to reading but Cait from The Notebook Sisters recommended it so I'm going to give it a whirl, we tend to like a lot of the same books so I trust her judgement! ;) I've been wanting to read The Bell Jar for a while because it sounds very intense and very cool, in White Space the main character Emma, frequently refers to the book and it's great importance to her, which reminded me that I kind of wanted to read it. I am so flippin' excited to read The Replacement! The cover is absolutely to die for and the concept sounds too awesomesauce for words! It was on my list of the top 14 books I'm excited to read in 2014 and I'm thrilled to finally get to read it! OCD Love Story and The Princess in The Opal Mask were new to me and I'm not really certain what I got myself into but I am excited to try something a little different from what I've been reading lately. By the way isn't the cover of OCD Love Story ridiculously cute!?! It says ,"I will not stalk that boy" all over it!
Audio Books:
Words in The Dust and Max are steps outside of my "normal zone," but my mom thought they seemed interesting and since she also has to listen to them I thought I'd give 'em a whirl. Beastly just sounds fun. I have been a bit obsessed with Beauty and The Beast and retellings of it since I read Grim, so I'm very excited to see what this version is like and I'm excited to look at the story from a new perspective! Ah, Between The Devil and The Deep Blue Sea...yes, I've already read it (see my review here) and I LOVED it and wish to have it's children (not really that's gross and weird and just no. To me anyways.). I'll have a lot of time on my hands, and a long car ride so I wasn't about to pass up the chance to relive the story, share it with my cousin and my mom, and see if the person reading it makes it sound more cool than it did in my head the first time!
Obtained/Gifted/Earned:
Ok so, because my library is made of awesomesauce, they give you little gifts for reading certain amounts over the summer. Once you've read your first 10 hours you get to pick a free book off this special shelf (and you get a ticket to the county fair but who cares about that when you are getting a free book, I mean really. Priorities people! Don't get me wrong I appreciate the ticket, but I might just appreciate the book a titch more...) So a big shout out thank you to KRL for the book and having such an amazing program going on! I picked I Hunt Killers, because it has been on my TBR list for a while now, and as we established in a previous Stacking the Shelves post, I have a slight obsession with crime and mystery books, movies, TV shows, ect.
So that's my little pile of heaven I've obtained this week! What did you get?

Also, help me decide what to read next! I want to read the library ones first since those come with a due date and I'm saving the audio books for another time, so here are your options...

What next?

Introducing Sunday Swoons!

It's time to introduce one of those new features I mentioned in my last post! I'm SO excited about this one! I wanted it to be Swoon Worthy Sunday, but alas another blog had a similar feature by that title, so Catherine helped me come up with something different (yes, I can see it is almost exactly the same, just shhh.). I'm not into chickflicks and mushy rom-coms ect. yet I'm still a bit of a romantic at heart and I love the perfect romantic relationship thrown into an adventurous YA book, and I love those totally swoon worthy scenes or characters. So Sunday Swoons was born! Here is how it works, every Sunday I will discuss, list, rave about, fangirl about, quote, or mention something totally swoon worthy that I've read! Feel free to join in but please link back and mention me, thanks you guys! You can link up below!

Today's Swoon Topic is: 5 of My All Time Favorite/Most Swoon Worthy YA Relationships!
(These are not in any particular order)

A. Judith and Luke in All the Truth That's in Me by Julie Berry

“If I thought I could never love you more, I didn't understand you well enough.”
B. Jax and Sasha in The Mephisto Covenant: The Redemption of Ajax by Trinity Faegen

"They stood together, arms wrapped tight, listening to the wind through the pines while snow fell softly all around. This was one of those moments in life she knew she’d never forget.

He moved his head so that his lips were close to her ear. “Run, Sasha. If you can do it, run like hell and don’t look back.”

Her breath came in short little gasps. “I don’t want to run.”

C. Cara and Aelyx in Alienated by Melissa Landers

" "Love's not easy for anyone! Why do you think the divorce rate's so high?"
"Love?" Turning to her dresser he idly lifted the tiny porcelain pig Tori had brought back from her last trip to Peru, flashing a sideways glance and a grin that made her belly quiver. "Are you in love?" "

D. Kai and Anna in The Sweet Trilogy by Wendy Higgins

"Those two need each other like a bullet needs a target”

E. Both Jeb and Alyssa and Alyssa and Morpheus in Splintered by A.G. Howard

“I was afraid of..."
"Go on..." I press.
"Of unloading my baggage on someone as sweet as you."
I can't keep the smile off my lips. "Oh, wow."
"What?"
"I guess we're both oblivious. That's the same reason I kept running from my feelings for you."
"Because I'm sweet?" That dimpled, boyish grin flashed over his face.”

---
“I hate you."
"Only because of the way I make you feel."
My fingernails eat into my palms. "Only because you bring out the worst in me."
"Oh no, luv. I bring out the life in you.”
